Cooperative Collections

DVDs on shelf

CLC's cooperative collections are collections of DVDs and books on CD that are divided into packets and rotated among multiple CLC member libraries at regular "swaps." Not all library users have turned to streaming and downloadables for their media needs, so how can you continue to serve those who prefer discs while keeping expenses to a minimum? Cooperative collections are the answer! Buying into a co-op saves your library time, money, and space, and ensures that library users have a continuously updated selection of materials.

CLC offers cooperative collections of general DVDs, foreign language and independent film DVDs, and books on CD. "Swaps" are held at locations around the state. Expand the content areas below to learn more.

WHAT IS A COOPERATIVE COLLECTION?

A cooperative collection is any type of collection shared among multiple libraries - in our case, CLC member libraries. Currently, CLC offers the following cooperative collections: general DVDs, foreign language and independent film DVDs, and books on CD. Buying into a shared collection saves your library time, money, and space, and ensures that library users have a continuously updated selection of materials.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Libraries may join one or more co-ops. Signups and renewals take place in the spring.
  • For each co-op, the library purchases one or more packets of materials. For each packet, there is an annual fee as well as a one-time startup fee.
  • Depending on the co-op, participating libraries meet monthly or quarterly to exchange packets of materials.
  • CLC's circuit coordinators handle the collection development, disc repair and replacement, and most other tasks normally done at your library, freeing up your staff for other duties. They also coordinate the monthly/quarterly "swaps."

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?

Your library, if:

  • You want to focus more on streaming, downloadables, and other newer technologies for your non-print offerings, but still want to offer a smaller collection of discs for patrons who want them.
  • You have a limited non-print budget.
  • You are a school, academic, or special library that wants to offer patrons & students a small collection of non-print entertainment titles.

ISN'T THIS KIND OF OUTDATED?

You might think so, but cooperative collections allow you to continue offering a continuously-changing supply of DVDs and books on CD to those patrons who aren't interested in downloadables and streaming - without making a huge investment in these materials. Cooperative collections allow you to keep everyone happy!

WHAT GROUPS ARE AVAILABLE?

  • DVDs, General - 30-35 titles in each packet, monthly rotation, 3 convenient groups (west, northeast, southeast)
  • DVDs, Foreign & Independent Films (FLIC) - 60-65 titles in each packet, quarterly rotation, statewide (meets in Middletown)
  • BOOKS on CD - 30-45 titles in each packet, quarterly rotation, 3 convenient groups (west, northeast, southeast)

 See below to explore more!

WHY SHOULD I JOIN? IS THERE REALLY A SAVINGS?

Cooperative collections SAVE:

  • MONEY - For a few hundred dollars a year, you get continuously updated collections - every month or every quarter depending on the circuit. That's hundreds of titles for your patrons to enjoy, at a fraction of the cost of buying them all.
  • STAFF TIME - Collection development, ordering, packaging, replacing lost/damaged discs, etc. - CLC does it all for you.
  • SPACE - Why keep hundreds or thousands of titles around when only the most current and popular are circulating, or when many (or most) of your patrons have moved to streaming services and downloadables?

HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST?

Fees range from $275 to $467 per packet per year, depending on the materials (DVDs or CDs) and the region (western region circuits have more materials per packet). Libraries may purchase any number of packets. For all circuits, there is also a one-time setup charge per packet in the first year, which enables us to buy materials to "stock" the new packet. Specifics are outlined under each circuit, below.
