Professional Development & Learning Opportunities

Here are a few places to look for continuing education opportunities for librarians and library staff.

CONTINUING EDUCATION - for all library staff

Some schools offer continuing education for practicing librarians and library staff.

Masters Programs:

CT Certification as a School Library Media Specialist
  • Southern Connecticut State University
SCSU offers Connecticut Initial Educator Certification, as well as Connecticut School Media Cross-Endorsement for those who are already certified in Connecticut in another discipline. The MLS plus certification option is no longer being offered - learn more.
  • Fairfield University
Fairfield offers an M.A. in Educational Technology, with or without School Library Media Specialization.
  • University of Rhode Island School Library Media Specialist Program
The School Library Media program is a track within the 36-credit hour MLIS program, enabling students to earn the MLIS degree while qualifying for School Library Media Certification in Rhode Island and other states in the Interstate Certificate Compact (including Connecticut).
  • Alternate Route to Certification for Teachers to Become Library Media Specialists (ARCLMS)
A program for CT certified teachers to obtain a cross-endorsement in Library Media for grades K-12. Classes are offered to coincide with teachers' schedules, with most of the instruction taking place in the summer.
Library Technical Assistant (LTA) Certificate Programs

These certificate programs are intended to enhance the skills of para-professionals currently working in libraries and to introduce library service to those wishing to enter the field. The mission is to prepare paraprofessionals for all aspects of library work, with particular emphasis on technology related aspects of the field.
