Meet Rosie Luther
Adjunct Faculty Librarian of Emerging Technology, WCSU Library
Makerspace Technician, Wallingford Public Library

What’s your current role, and what does a good day at work look like for you?

I am both a public and academic librarian, so my day constantly varies! As a makerspace technician in the public library, the best days are when I learn something new about a skill or craft a patron brings in. As an academic librarian, putting the search puzzle together to find the perfect sources for a niche project makes the job satisfying for me.

How did you find your way into library work?

I took a long, winding road into library work. I started in community college with a graphic design degree while working for the colleges in workforce development. That sparked love for education and working with the public. I then moved into psychology and PTSD neuroscience research, where I realized what an important community role the libraries played in the lives of the vulnerable populations I was working with. It was the logical next step to move into working directly with those communities, and now I truly love what I do.

What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?

So many things! I find that knowledge is only worthwhile when you use it, and growth requires change.

What kind of work makes you lose track of time?

While solving a research puzzle is hugely satisfying, I find that working on an interesting creative project with patrons makes the time fly by. I once had a patron who was building a video of images from his time as a Parisian circus performer in the 60's. We spent hours digitizing images while he told me stories about each image. Those kinds of genuine connections mixed with a creative and educational challenge really invests me in the work.

Who has influenced you the most?

I have had several great mentors over the years, but two stand out. Michelle Fuhrman, who is in workforce development with the state, and Kara Canney, a director at one of the first libraries I worked at; both modeled community care, speaking your mind, and doing work you believe in. They have both deeply influenced the person and librarian I am now.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Say yes. You can decide later if it is right for you or not, but always give the moment a chance.

What’s something you’re still learning?

I am still learning how to relax. Between work, hobbies and a full life, keeping everything rolling while also finding time to be still can feel like a big task.

What’s a small win that made you proud recently?

I have quite a few houseplants (several of which I have obtained through library plant propagation swaps) that all have different care needs. I have 10 succulents that are over 6 years old and 6 of them flowered this year! It feels great to put work into these small living things and see them thrive.

What’s a skill or interest you have that might surprise people?

This is not a surprise to anyone who spends more than five minutes with me as I won't stop talking about it, but I play roller derby! I am in my second playing season, and it gives me an outlet and community to lean on. I would not be able to do what I do without it.

What keeps you hopeful about the future of libraries?

The people. As much as it can be difficult to work with the public, the communities and individuals who bring life to the libraries give me hope that we can work together to build the future of libraries.

Meet Alyssa Dansinghani
Associate Library Director, Hamden Public Library

What’s your current role, and what does a good day at work look like for you?

I have the privilege of being the Associate Library Director at Hamden Public Library. A good day for me is one that keeps me engaged. Collaborating with staff, addressing challenges, and making progress on projects that improve library access are things
that make me feel productive and successful.

How did you find your way into library work?

I spent so much of my childhood frequenting libraries, and was lucky enough to obtain my first library job when I was 17. A friend of mine told me her mom worked at the library and mentioned a job opening. I applied and was hired in the technical services
department. I feel privileged to have worked in many types of libraries and library departments over the years.

What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?

Libraries as quiet spaces. I actually remember the moment many years ago when this shifted for me. Like a lightbulb going off in my head I remember the joy that came with embracing the noise because it translates to creativity, learning, and innovation.

What kind of work makes you lose track of time?

I love a project. I find weeding especially relaxing.

Who has influenced you the most?

This is a hard question. I have been blessed to know strong women who have modeled leadership, resilience, and the value of hard work. The influence of these women throughout my life has taught me to tackle things with confidence and empathy.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

To remain curious. I try to maintain that curiosity during every interaction I have and use curiosity to tackle every obstacle I face. I find that it helps me pause and provides me with a positive outlook when faced with something that may be frustrating.

What’s something you’re still learning?

So many things! Which is a gift, I love learning and we are all works in progress. An author I follow once said her mantra is: “I value and appreciate people who tell me the truth, even if I don’t want to hear it, because the truth makes me better. If
I see who I am, unflinching, and I know what I am capable of, I will know where I need improvement.” This really resonated with me and I take it and the advice to be curious with me every day.

What’s a small win that made you proud recently?

I am renovating my childhood home that was built in 1910. As it’s an old house, every single project that you believe is an easy fix turns out to be a huge new problem. This weekend I was able to remove wallpaper in one room in just a few hours. It was
so easy to do and I am still smiling from the win.

What’s a skill or interest you have that might surprise people?

I didn’t know how to answer this so I asked my friend and she said I should share how when I see something I like - be it a craft, food or house remodel idea - I say, “Oh I can make that” instead of buying it or hiring someone ... and then I proceed to
    make or do the thing.

What keeps you hopeful about the future of libraries?

The people. Our patrons still value their library and I see every day how we are fostering a love for the library for patrons of all ages. The adaptability of libraries is also encouraging as we evolve as our community evolves. As we continue to create
spaces for connection we will continue to see community engagement.

Meet Sara Ray
Adult Services Librarian, Bloomfield Public Library

What’s your current role, and what does a good day at work look like for you?

I am an Adult Services Librarian at Bloomfield Public Library and focus on literacy programming for adults, as well as leading our Teen Advisory Group. Every day is different, including working at both of our physical locations, and I thrive on this variety.
A good day to me has a mix of program planning, interacting with the public, and connecting books to young readers.

How did you find your way into library work?

I learned about being a Library Page during Foods class in high school (an 18 hour/wk position), applied to my hometown Bristol Public Library, and was hired during the summer before college. I changed my college major to ILS a year later and after 3
years of paging I was hired as a full time Circulation Clerk. I earned my BS and MLS and then started the great journey known as Interviews.

What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?

Saying No. We want to do it all, to benefit our patrons, but life only provides so much time and energy.

What kind of work makes you lose track of time?

Program planning and scheduling. I usually have a list of folks I have saved for a future time, an overarching idea of what I want to offer, and in one day, I can easily plan a whole season, via email.

Who has influenced you the most?

At Bristol Public Library, my Circ Supervisor (for 11 years) Floyd Wyche, and our consistent staff who were and are like family to me. They encouraged me to pursue my career by acknowledging how much I enjoyed being a Page but also said, “check out the
Occupation Handbook” to manage realistic expectations. Plus, many, many Teen Librarians over the years who allowed me to shadow their programs, collaborate, steal, borrow, vent, and present together.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“You seem to really love working in the library, would you want to become a librarian?” Both, one of my Circ Mamas and my now husband said it - within 3 days of each other. Yes. The best action I took as a 19 year old making life decisions and paying
    for college myself.

What’s something you’re still learning?

Technology. Every day I learn more about technology, and how to troubleshoot with patience, through our patrons and the Digital Divide. Luckily, our investigative skills as library workers help us find the answers we need, no matter the topic.

What’s a small win that made you proud recently?

It’s a year old now but I was nominated for the town’s Employee of the Quarter and promoted to Librarian II. The fact that my library’s leadership team values me highly for both - that’s a win - and my mom framed the nomination speech and gave it to me
    for Christmas.

What’s a skill or interest you have that might surprise people?

Oh, my super secret power? I’m good at identifying cars. I think it’s part of constantly being aware of my surroundings, sorting data in my brain, and too many games of MASH as a kid (if ya know, ya know).

What keeps you hopeful about the future of libraries?

Youth. When a child gets super excited about asking for a book at the service desk, or a teen tells you that you always display great titles, or an intergenerational audience comes to a program you planned. They are our future and it brings me joy daily.

Meet Eileen Rhodes
Library Director, CT State Community College, Capital Campus

What’s your current role, and what does a good day at work look like for you?

I currently work as the Library Director at CT State Community College, Capital Campus, in Hartford, CT. A good work day is when I feel like I have made a difference in a student's life by helping them with their information needs.

How did you find your way into library work?

I always wanted to be in a service-oriented profession where I could give back to my community. My initial plan was to become an elementary school teacher but I when I finished my student teaching experience in a first grade classroom, I realized that it wasn't the best fit for me. I went from a school library media specialist in a K-6 school, to a college-level librarian and then to a college library director. I really enjoy my work because there are always new challenges and new skills to learn, and I love my CT State students! They inspire me every day.

What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?

Early in my career, I was heavily focused on the resources I could offer my patrons. Our collections and technology matter, but they are meaningful only when paired with exceptional customer service to every patron. How my students, faculty and staff feel in their library is essential to their experience.

What kind of work makes you lose track of time?

I lose track of time when I’m working with staff to address challenges. Whether that’s a tricky patron situation, a confusing workflow, or a new service we’re trying to implement, I enjoy asking questions, clarifying the problem, and helping staff think through options so we get to a practical solution and they walk away feeling more confident and supported.

Who has influenced you the most?

My parents have had the greatest influence on my path to a career in libraries. They instilled a deep respect for education and made it possible for me to complete my degrees without taking on debt, something I am profoundly grateful for and will always appreciate.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

To view my empathy as a leadership strength. One of my previous supervisors encouraged me to use my own skills and traits to hone my leadership style instead of attempting to mirror leadership qualities in others that I admired. I realize how invaluable empathy is to trust-building with my team, collaboration and connecting with patrons.

What’s something you’re still learning?

I am still learning how to make administrators truly understand the value we offer to our community.

What’s a small win that made you proud recently?

I recently taught an information literacy session for a group of nursing students that focused on research strategies and a demonstration of a specific nursing database. Over the next week, several of those students stopped me in the library to say how helpful the session had been and how they were already using what they learned.

What’s a skill or interest you have that might surprise people?

I love singing karaoke! :)

What keeps you hopeful about the future of libraries?

No matter how powerful AI becomes, it cannot replace the empathy, judgment, and relationship‑building that library staff offer to our patrons. Only people (librarians!) can truly listen, understand context, navigate nuance, and create a welcoming space where patrons feel seen, supported, and are part of a community. We do great work and will continue to!

PUBLISHED APRIL 2026

Meet Anthony Marrocolla
Director of Information & Adult Services, Ferguson Library

What’s your current role, and what does a good day at work look like for you?

I'm currently the Director of Information & Adult Services at the Ferguson Library. On any given day we have a multitude of things going on; reference services, notary, tech assistance, book groups, and programming. A good day at work is when the
library is filled with people using it!

How did you find your way into library work?

While pursuing my undergraduate degree I worked for the art librarian at Hunter College. I assisted students and faculty with their research work, and helped manage the day to day operations of the small library. It was a wonderful experience, and inspired
    me to pursue a MLIS.

What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?

I’ve come to terms with weeding. It used to make me sad to see books leave the collection, but our shelves aren’t magical—they don’t expand on their own.

What kind of work makes you lose track of time?

I often lose track of time when I am organizing events. The goal is to create a wonderful experience for the author/presenter, and the attendees.

Who has influenced you the most?

I am constantly influenced and inspired by my librarian colleagues, particularly the wonderful Information & Adult Services team at the Ferguson Library.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Be reliable and show up when you say you will. Also, practice gratitude!

What’s something you’re still learning?

Management is a continuous process: mistakes happen, but accountability matters.

What’s a small win that made you proud recently?

Every day there’s something that happens in the library that makes me proud—and I genuinely mean that. A recent highlight was hosting journalist Deborah Roberts for an event that was warmly received by our community.

What’s a skill or interest you have that might surprise people?

Like many of my colleagues, I’m skilled at stretching a small budget to make great things happen.

What keeps you hopeful about the future of libraries?

Libraries are for everyone—regardless of socioeconomic background, immigration status, employment situation, language spoken, or gender. They are open, welcoming spaces where all people can access information, resources, and opportunities for learning.
By providing equitable services and inclusive programs, libraries help ensure that every member of the community feels respected, supported, and empowered to explore, connect, and grow. That is what keeps me hopeful.

Meet Tess McCool
School Librarian, Suffield High School

What’s your current role, and what does a good day at work look like for you?

School Librarian. A good day at work is one where a student is very excited to check out a book or tell me about a book they're reading. The only thing that makes that day better is if someone has a citation question. (I love citations!)

How did you find your way into library work?

I was a high school English teacher thinking of pursuing an additional degree, and the idea to become a librarian literally happened while I was at my public library. It felt like a natural fit given my love for reading, learning, and research.

What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?

Brussels sprouts. I used to hate them, but now they're my favorite vegetable.

What kind of work makes you lose track of time?

Any work that requires cleaning or organizing. I find both very therapeutic and get lost in the process.

Who has influenced you the most?

My dad. He always has a book in hand and because of him I've grown up with a love for learning. He also has lived his life caring about others - those he knows and those he doesn't know at all. He's the most selfless person I know.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My previous building principal once asked at a faculty meeting, "Are you listening to respond or are you listening to understand?" That question really stuck with me, and I try to keep that in mind anytime I engage in conversation, especially one where
we have different points of view.

What’s something you’re still learning?

How to make myself a priority. I'm really bad at that.

What’s a small win that made you proud recently?

I had a few students recently thank me for keeping the library open during lunch waves so they could go somewhere other than the cafeteria. I felt proud that they recognized the library as a safe space.

What’s a skill or interest you have that might surprise people?

I like to rewrite and perform songs, from Beyoncé to Broadway, to teach research skills. The students cringe, but I know it works because they complain that the songs get stuck in their heads.

What keeps you hopeful about the future of libraries?

I feel hopeful knowing that the vast majority of people value and support libraries and librarians.

LIBRARY NEWS

At Babcock Library in Ashford, this summer’s program, Camp Babcock, has been a great success. Developed by children's specialist Chonté Fields, the program builds on a similar initiative offered last year, with a renewed
focus on arts and creativity-themed activities each week since the start of summer vacation. A key improvement this year has been the introduction of separate sessions for different age groups, elementary-aged children in the morning and middle and
high school students in the afternoon, while maintaining the same weekly themes. Ms. Fields not only designed the program but also led the sessions each week. Although attracting strong participation in rural Ashford can be a challenge, these programs
have been well attended and enthusiastically received.

The Brookfield Library will celebrate its 50th anniversary in its current location at 182 Whisconier Road on September 6, 2025. Opened in 1975 as a 9,600-square-foot building designed to hold 35,000 books - when Brookfield had a population
of around 10,000 - the Library now serves approximately 17,500 residents and holds a collection of over 65,000 circulating items. To mark this milestone, library staff have invited patrons to share their reflections and memories. On the day of the
celebration, current and former staff and volunteers, town and state officials, and members of the public are invited to enjoy a world-class juggling and comedy show, a reception with refreshments and memorabilia displays, and a concert by a local
band featuring 1970s music. All are welcome to join in celebrating this important milestone for a cornerstone of the Brookfield community.

passing on the stories and wisdom she shared so generously throughout her years as a children’s librarian.

libraries in the area to loan out Tonies to families, and they have been a huge success since the first week. (Editorial note: CLC has a discount on Tonies! More info HERE.)

2024: Small Business Support: A How-To Guide. The presentation had 18 attendees who were so interested in the topic that it ran about 20 minutes over schedule to answer all of the great audience questions.

Wendy Connal, library director at the Bill Memorial Library, recently celebrated her 10th anniversary as director. The Board of Trustees celebrated her milestone at their recent board meeting, and then staff presented
her with flowers and cookies the next day as a surprise. Staff also posted a slideshow on the library's Facebook page with photos highlighting Wendy's time at the library over the past 10 years. Wendy is much loved at the library!

and many, many families will fondly remember her Mother Goose storytimes.

Kim Wilk, a Library Technician, retired from Southern Connecticut State University on November 1, 2024, after nearly 40 years of working at the Buley Library.

LIBRARY NEWS

The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library is excited about their very first StoryWalk®! It runs until November 16th at the Berlin Veterans’ Memorial Park. Berlin's StoryWalk® title is You Be You by Linda Kranz (2011). All the info can be found on Berlin-Peck's website.

The Beacon Falls Library is excited to announce that it has received a grant from the Katharine Matthies Foundation to partially fund the purchase of a Charlie Cart. The Charlie Cart is a portable kitchen classroom that will allow
the library to offer hands-on food education programs to the community. The Beacon Falls Friends of the Library also generously contributed to the funding of the Charlie Cart. The Charlie Cart Project provides community organizations with a mobile kitchen unit equipped with all the necessary tools, curriculum, and resources to create a comprehensive food education program. This program will enable the library to offer a variety of cooking classes,
nutrition workshops, and other food-related activities for patrons of all ages.

The library construction grant recommended by the Connecticut State Library for Kent Memorial Library (Kent) has been approved by the State Bond Commission. Staff hope to break ground in the first half of 2025 for new construction
    and renovation.

Otis Library began a partnership with SCADD (Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) in February. One of SCADD's recovery coaches holds office hours at the library
on Wednesday afternoons from 1pm-2:30pm. The coach will speak with anyone struggling with addiction and those seeking support for a friend or family member in need. The library staff have referred patrons to the service, and people who have spoken
with the coach and received help have referred people they know as well. Word is definitely starting to spread. Since February, 10-12 people have enrolled in a detox program as a direct result of this collaboration. Many more have received guidance
and information on recovery. Although SCADD's office is just a few doors down from the library, people are coming to the library to seek help. "Libraries are a trusted space" wins again! At the time the program started, staff decided to try it for
a month, then six months. At this point, both SCADD and Otis Library would like to see the program continue in perpetuity.

Hartford Public Library is officially reopening the main floor of their Downtown Library after a flood closed their doors in December of 2022. They are hosting a press conference and ribbon cutting on Wednesday, November 20, at 11:00 a.m. at the Downtown Library, 500 Main Street, Hartford. The Main Street doors will open for public service immediately following the ceremony. Staff can’t
wait to share the renewed and restored Library with the community.

including Assistant Superintendent Stephen Bergin, the principals and reading specialists from all four of Ansonia's schools, numerous members of the Library Board of Directors and the Board of Alderman, Library Director Jen Lester, and Children's
Librarian Jen Shuart for their cooperative efforts to work together to provide children's programs for Ansonia school children. The Board of Education generously donated $10,000 worth of children's books to The Children and Teen Rooms at The Ansonia

The Brookfield Library and Arts for Learning Connecticut recently presented Flamenco: The Art and Culture of Southern Spain. Artist Rebeca Tomas was accompanied by guitarist Val, and together they danced and shared music before
almost 75 attendees of all ages. Participants learned about the history of the different cultures and religions that created Flamenco. The audience was delighted and engaged with Spanish vocabulary and counting, zapateo (footwork) and palmas (rhythmic
handclapping). Local caterer Dash N' Dine provided an assortment of tasty Spanish desserts. The performance ended with participants learning a short choreographed sequence of lively dance! Olé!

Children and families filled Eastern Connecticut State University’s Child and Family Development Resource Center on Sept. 17 for a childhood literacy event titled “Read a Book, Love a Book: Developing Literacy.” This event featured
author readings and literacy activities led by education students who are training to become teachers. The Willimantic Public Library helped families sign up for library cards, and CASL handed out free books to local
families. Behind the coordination of the event was education professor Susannah Richards. “It's about igniting, delighting and cultivating a love of literacy,” she said. “This was a wonderful collaboration with students in the elementary
certification program to create activities that were free of charge to parents.” Read the full article from ECSU here.

Helene Murtha and Cindy Schofield from Southern Connecticut State University were published in Public Library Quarterly. Their article is Exploring the Nexus: Homeschooling and Library Engagement in Connecticut.
During the summer of 2023, public librarians in CT were invited to participate in an examination of the relationship between homeschoolers and public libraries. Thank you to all who completed the Understanding Public Library Support for Homeschoolers survey. CT homeschool families were also surveyed to assess their knowledge and use of public libraries in the education of their children. The comparison of the responses by these two groups was presented at the 2024 CT Library Association Conference.
As suspected, libraries are a major resource for homeschool families, but there are disconnects in how collections and services are accessed. The full study has been published and is now available in Public Library Quarterly (a Taylor &
    Francis publication):
