Genre Study: Regency Romance

For our first genre study as a group, we will be looking at one of the most popular sub-genres of romance novel: the Regency romance. Participants are asked to read at least one romance to prepare.

Primary book: Lord of Scoundrels, by Loretta Chase This book not only epitomizes Regency romance, it almost always makes any list of best romance novels ever written. If you can, read this one. If your library doesn’t have it, order it in - you need it for a romance collection.

Other books to try, if you’d prefer:

  • Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake, by Sarah MacLean
  • Devil in Winter, by Lisa Kleypas
  • Desperate Duchesses, by Eloisa James
  • The Duke and I, by Julia Quinn
  • Flowers from the Storm, by Laura Kinsale
  • A Night to Surrender, by Tessa Dare
  • The Rake, by Mary Jo Putney

You could also read any other Regency romances by these authors, if you can’t find these exact titles. Please be sure that you’ve selected a Regency and not a contemporary - many authors write both! If you’re not sure if it’s a Regency, just flip through and figure out whether the hero is a duke or earl or some other peer of the realm. If not, it is almost definitely not a Regency! Contact Stephanie ( with any questions.

Registration is open now - please register using the link above. No sign-in required - all are welcome.

In the event of inclement weather - you may not receive an email. Please use the following guideline:
  • If the public schools in Darien are closed - the meeting is postponed to the snow date, March 21.
  • If the public schools in Darien have a delayed opening - the meeting proceeds as scheduled.
