Working Successfully with Your Board of Trustees and Friends of the Library

As a new library director, you will need to learn to work successfully with your Board of Trustees and Friends of the Library. These volunteers can be wonderful, hard-working advocates who help make your job easier and even help increase your budget. But it can be tricky navigating the pitfalls and knowing exactly what everyone’s role is. Misunderstandings or poor communication between the groups can lead to a breakdown in relationships and increased stress for you!

This month, Betsy McIlvaine, President of the Association of Connecticut Library Boards and Paul McIlvaine, President of the Friends of Connecticut Libraries, will lead a discussion on how library directors, trustees and Friends can work together successfully. Please join us for what is sure to be a helpful and enlightening discussion and feel free to bring any current issues you may currently be dealing with. We will also be planning for the rest of year so all suggestions for topics and meeting locations are encouraged.

The New Director’s Roundtable is a forum to encourage discussion, professional development and support among those who are new or new-ish to the library director role and to anyone from out-of-state who has recently taken a library director position in Connecticut.
