What are you doing Tuesday night? (AKA - CLC and Connecticut libraries need you!)
Monday, March 2, 2015
As you may have heard, Governor Malloy's proposed budget for FY15-16 completely eliminates state funding for the Connecticut Library Consortium. This funding represents about 64% of CLC's operating funds and is vital to CLC's ability to continue to bring our members cost savings and professional development through our cooperative purchasing and educational programs.
In addition to the proposed cuts, Governor's Bill No. 942, AN ACT IMPLEMENTING THE BUDGET RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE GOVERNOR CONCERNING EDUCATION, would repeal Conn. Gen. Stat. Sec. 11-9e that defines state-supported cooperative library service units - the official terminology for CLC. If this bill is enacted, new legislation would be required before CLC could ever be funded again.
What can you do to help?
We are working with the Connecticut Library Association, the Connecticut State Library, and other library groups on a long-term, unified advocacy program - but we need your immediate help.
Tuesday, March 3rd (5 pm onward) is the first public hearing about the proposed budget cuts to several State Library programs including CLC. You can help our chances of getting through this first hurdle in two ways:
- Simply show up and wear a "Save Library Funding" sticker. Our advocacy advisors say a large and visible number of library supporters in the audience will make a strong statement. You don't have to stay the entire time, but we need bodies to be there from about 5 pm to when the testimony ends in the late hours. Location: Room 2C of the Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Avenue, Hartford (parking and directions here - scroll down for LOB info). If you think you or some of your library constituents can attend, please let us know by contacting email@example.com. Library supporter stickers will be provided that evening. Bring your own reading material.
- Submit written testimony. Even if you can't attend, you can submit written testimony about how you feel about the proposed budget cuts. Please email written testimony in Word or PDF format to APPtestimony@cga.ct.gov. To assist you with quantifying the value of CLC, we can provide you with updated savings figures for FY13-14 and the first half of FY14-15. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for help accessing this information.
Tuesday is just the first step in this long budget process. We will be reaching out to you throughout the upcoming weeks with news and ways you can help Connecticut libraries and CLC. We believe what we do for you, our members, is vital for Connecticut's communities, are committed to demonstrating it loudly and clearly. We have lots of data that supports our value, but we will need you to help us illustrate our numbers with real examples of community impact. If you have questions, ideas or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact CLC Executive Director Jennifer Keohane at email@example.com or 203.915.2465 (cell).
Thank you for your support. Go Libraries!
