WE DIG SUMMER READING BANNERVariations on the Theme

Archaeology, local history, construction, paleontology, geology, even rock & roll can all be incorporated with the We Dig Summer Reading theme. Here are some unique spins libraries are using.

  • Monroe Public Library is undergoing a construction project this summer. Therefore, Margaret Borchers, Children Librarian, has tailored We Dig Summer Reading as a construction theme to reflect and complement all the work taking place.

    • Hard Harts will be given out as prizes.
    • Participants will bury a library time capsule.
    • Lunch with construction workers.
    • Look over library blueprints with architect.
    • Have kids create their own blueprints.
    • Elicit feedback from kids on how to design the new children's room. Have them draw pictures of what they would like in the new library.
    • Various construction crafts.
    • Big Truck day at the library.

  • C.H. Booth Library in Newtown is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, and Bethel Public Library its 150th anniversary. They are using We Dig Summer Reading to complement their town-wide celebrations. They both will have a special focus on local history, work closely with town historian, bury time capsules, be pressent at town celebrations and more.
