Keeping Up with New Books & Ordering Processes

So many new books are published each year that there's no longer any way to estimate how many there are. How on earth can we keep up? What's a readers' advisor to do? At this meeting, we'll share resources and tricks we all use to keep on top of the book world. We'll also talk about how keeping up with new books affects our ordering processes--many libraries are moving away from the traditional model of collection development, but it's not clear yet what works best in the new world of carts, Edelweiss, and new measurement tools. Bring examples of what works for you, as well as your struggles!

Here is our detailed agenda:

  1. Introductions
  2. Discussion: PrePubs
How can we keep up with release dates?
Is it enough to know the next best seller? What about those books by lesser- known authors?
How can we let our patrons know what is coming up?
How can we spread the word to our colleagues?
    Challenge: E-Book and/or E-Audiobook and DVDs preordering
Challenge: Standing orders for fiction versus reading the prepub / journal info
  3. Discussion: Ordering Process
What kind of partnership between the RA Librarian and Tech Services is most beneficial for both the front and the back end?
How can we best estimate the copies of books needed?
How can we as RA librarians make sure our patrons are getting the number of copies they need of new books? What is that golden number?
What are the challenges of ordering multiple copies?
Challenge: How can we provide prepublication information on digital content in our catalogs?
Challenge: Book groups and ordering multiple copies of new books
