Personnel Policies & the Law

 

As a new director, personnel issues can be intimidating, particularly for libraries without a human resources department to rely on. No matter the number of employees you have, you want to be sure your policies and practices don’t leave you on the wrong side of employment law. Attorney Barry Waters from the firm Murtha Cullina will join us this month to discuss what you need to know to handle personnel issues legally and answer any questions you may have regarding your policies and practices.

About the speaker: Barry defends corporations in federal and state courts and in administrative agencies against employee claims involving discrimination based on age, sex, race, and disability; whistle-blowing; retaliation; and wrongful discharge. He also counsels employers on human resources policies and employment laws, including effective disciplinary and termination & separation strategies designed to avoid employment litigation.
 

The New Directors Roundtable is a forum to encourage discussion, professional development and support among those who are new or new-ish to the library director role, and anyone from out-of-state who has recently taken a library director position in Connecticut.
