CLA Minimum Salary Guideline
The Connecticut Library Association recommends a minimum salary for entry-level positions requiring an MLS.
As of July 1, 2009, this salary is $25.67/hour.
For full-time jobs, this translates to:
- $46,711/year for a 35 hour week
- $50,049/year for a 37.5 hour week
- $53,385/year for a 40 hour week
As of July 1, 2010, this salary will increase by 1.2% to $26.00/hour.
For full-time jobs, this translates to:
- $47,320/year for a 35 hour week
- $50,700/year for a 37.5 hour week
- $54,080/year for a 40 hour week

University Librarian - Sacred Heart University, in Fairfield, Connecticut, is the second-largest Catholic university in New England. The Princeton Review includes SHU in its "Best 371 Colleges: 2010" and U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2009" ranks SHU in the top tier of Master's Universities in the North. Job Description: As the chief administrative officer of the University Library, the University Librarian leads planning fo the library's future, oversees all operations and services of the library, supports the University curriculum, and provides for the research and information literacy needs of the students, staff and faculty. Scope & Magnitude: Leads the University's efforts to plan for and implement a full range of library services. Provides all planning for and administration of library services. Prepares and monitors the budget for the library. Oversees a staff of professional librarians, library assistants and student aides who provide vital library services, such as reference services, including library research instruction, ordering, cataloging and processing of all library materials, stack maintenance and circulation of library materials. Guides the development of the library collection through the establishment and administration of library materials selection policies and procedures for all formats including print and electronic resources. Requirements: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school required with a second graduate degree in a specialty field preferred. Five (5) years professional library administration experience, in addition to five (5) years other professional library experience required. Experience with electronic library resources for teaching and learning, including on-line materials also required. University library experience preferred. Working knowledge of one or more world languages preferred. Understanding and ability to articulate the values and mission of Sacred Heart University. | 12.29.2009 | Assistant Librarian in Library Services - Buley Library, Southern Connecticut State University. Search #: 10-027. Specialization(s): Collection Development; Acquisitions. Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities: The Collection Development Librarian is responsible for guiding the growth of the library collections in support of the University's academic programs by coordinating the selection, acquisition, preservation, and de-acquisition of library materials in all formats. Works collaboratively with library faculty and administration to position collections for maximum use. Participates in resource allocation and planning. (This is a tenure track position.) Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited M.L.S. degree with minimum of two years of professional collection development/acquisitions experience in an academic library. Experience with integrated library systems, especially related to acquisitions functions. Experience with fund accounting and library budgeting practices. Knowledge of collection development principles and trends, including experience updating a collection development policy. Experience working with vendors and electronic content providers, including book vendors, publishers, and library consortia. Experience in financial, statistical, and accreditation reporting practices and making presentations. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be effective in working within a flat organizational structure. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Innovative Interfaces ILS program, primarily acquisitions module. Experience supervising employees and/or student assistants. Experience working with a subject liaison program that includes working with teaching faculty. Familiarity with trends related to digital acquisitions. Familiarity with emerging cataloging principles. Familiarity with spreadsheet, preservation, collection assessment tools and authoring web pages. Connecticut General Assembly seeks a head librarian for its Legislative Library, providing professional nonpartisan assistance to legislators and staff. Successful candidate will participate in and oversee all aspects of library operations including reference, collection development, budgeting, supervision, evaluation, training, marketing, and strategic planning. Ideal candidate will have: strong reference background (federal and state government knowledge preferred); proficiency with legal resources, print and electronic; teamwork and customer service orientation; demonstrated leadership skills in a collaborative environment; excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills; demonstrated knowledge of professional library science principles and practices. Within each category, jobs are listed in alphabetical order by city/town in which the job is located. Job titles are in bold type; hiring institutions (e.g. libraries, towns, universities, school systems, corporations) are in purple.

What is a "professional" position?
Professional level positions in libraries include directors, department heads, and other management level positions; most positions that include "librarian" in the title (eg., children's librarians, reference librarians, teen librarians, catalogers/cataloging librarians, corporate/law/medical librarians, etc.); school library media specialists; and many more. Just because a hiring institution does not require an MLS for such positions does not mean they are not professional in nature. Positions with words such as "technician" or "assistant" or "clerk" in the job title are generally considered support staff and thus are exempt from the CLA salary guideline. For more information:
