Executive Director,
CLC (Ex-Officio)

Volume 7, Issue 7 - March 12, 2010

CLC Welcomes New Executive Director

Jill Dugas HughesCLC is thrilled to welcome our new Executive Director, Jill Dugas Hughes. Jill brings to CLC and its members a dynamic combination of library leadership and development expertise. She began her library career in New York state, earning an MLS from SUNY Buffalo and directing the Red Jacket Community Library, a combination public and K-12 school library. She also coordinated annual giving and community outreach programs for the Geneva Public Library.

Here in Connecticut, Jill worked as a School Librarian at Thomas Hooker School in Bridgeport before spearheading what became Connecticut's first-ever library referendum campaign, resulting in a guaranteed 1 mill of the city budget allocated to the Bridgeport Public Library. Jill also brings expertise in grantwriting and oversight, marketing, web development, and project management, as well as experience in non-profits, academia, and library service to children.

Jill can be reached by phone at the Middletown office (860.344.8777) or via email at jhughes@ctlibrarians.org. You'll also find her at meetings, roundtables, and other events over the coming months!

A few words from Jill:

Greetings colleagues! I look forward to meeting each of you and learning how the Connecticut Library Consortium can support your libraries. I feel lucky to have joined a terrific staff, and will be taking some time over the next few months to learn from each of you. We are in the midst of revising our strategic plan and welcome any suggestions you may have.

On another note, I would like to echo the thoughts of the entire staff as we say thank you, goodbye and best of luck to Donna Flatley, our Office Manager. Thank you for your commitment and loyalty to CLC, Donna. Enjoy your retirement!

Thanks to the excellent leadership of Interim Directors Deb Zulick and Pattie Noren, I have had a quick transition. I hope to see you all at CLA!

Getting YOUR Word Out

Have you tried our Member Forums? Visited us on Facebook?
CLClist may be gone, but CLC has two new venues for you to interact with your Connecticut library colleagues.

1. Online Forums - CLC has set up a variety of online "forums" where you can post your questions, discussion topics, reviews, giveaways, etc. The best thing about forums? Visit ONCE, set your preferences, and from then on, you'll receive all postings via an email like this one:
CLC Forums email example
Never visit the page again! But forums will only be a useful resource if people use them - so why not give it a try? Here are the steps ...
  1. Visit www.ctlibrarians.org and sign in with your username and password.
  2. Go to the Forums page - you'll find it under the "Members" tab.
  3. Choose "Preferences."
  4. Check "All" next to the topics you wish to follow. You may also follow individual "threads," or subjects, from within a topic; to do this, choose "Threads" and select the threads you wish to follow from the pop-up.
  5. In checkboxes at the bottom, check the first box, and either the second or third box depending on the email address you wish to use.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and choose "Save Forum Preferences."
  7. Post a message, or watch your email for messages to come in!

2. Facebook
- CLC is on Facebook! If you have a Facebook account, you can use our page to interact about all things CT library related. Even if you don't have an account, take a look at our page by clicking here:

Is your library on Facebook? Post the link to our wall, or email it to csarrazin@ctlibrarians.org, and we'll add it to our list of Favorite Pages - generating more traffic for YOUR page!

More Networking Options from our Partners
  • There are many active forums, or discussion boards available on ct.webjunction.org, sponsored by the CT State Library. Pay a visit and partake in the ones that interest you.
  • The CT Library Association has a Facebook group, which is slightly different from a Facebook page. Check it out - with conference time coming up, the group has been very active!
  • The CT Association of School Librarians (CASL) has a social network on Ning, "the social platform for the world's interests and passions online."
  • Listservs - ConnTech for all library-related topics, GoodnightMoon for children's services, Speak for YA services, or CASL-L for school librarians.
Try these tools and let us know what you think - via whatever method you choose!

Faxon Census ProjectMarcia Lewis, branch librarian at West Hartford Library's Faxon Branch, heads up West Hartford's "Complete Count Committee" for Census 2010 - working to get the message out to underserved and undercounted groups in her community. Here, a young West Hartford resident shows off her unique hand-printed CENSUS 2010 T-shirt in Faxon Library's Welcome Center.  Behind her are some of the other 200 shirts designed by young users at Faxon's CENSUS T-shirt Handprint workshops. COMINGS & GOINGS

it was a bittersweet day last month when the CLC board accepted Donna Flatley's retirement letter. Sixteen years ago, Donna was hired by Eastern CT Libraries (one of CLC's predecessors) to manage information technology. She was responsible for getting us connected - and keeping us connected - to you, our members. Over the years, she moved and set up ECL/CLC's computer networks at least 5 times. She assembled a portable computer training lab and drove it to member libraries, where she would conduct customized training for library staff. She did IT consulting, troubleshooting, and taught classes. When Jan Gluz passed away in 2008 and CLC needed a bookkeeper and office manager, Donna took on this challenge as well. Donna and her husband plan on doing some traveling and spending more time with the grandchildren, and she'll finally have more time for her exquisite sewing projects. Please join the CLC staff in wishing Donna a long, happy, healthy retirement!

Erica Joncyk has been named Director of the D.M. Hunt Library in Falls Village, succeeding June "Cookie" Kubarek, who is retiring this month. Erica has served as the library's Assistant Director for twelve years. June joined the staff in 1984 as Assistant Librarian for General Duties, became the library's first official Children's Librarian two years later, and was appointed Director in 1993. Congratulations to both!
