May Madness: We're down to the Extraordinary Eight!

It's time for the second annual ... MAY MADNESS CHALLENGE LOGO

What is the InfoAnytime "May Madness" Challenge?
The InfoAnytime Challenge is a standard elimination tournament - the last library standing wins! The 64 heaviest volume InfoAnytime libraries qualify to participate in the InfoAnytime Challenge. If your library is in the top 64 you are automatically in!

Of the original 64 libraries, the following 8 remain as of May 8:

  • Academic libraries: Capital CC
  • Public libraries: Ansonia, Bridgeport, Clinton/Hull, East Lyme, Granby, Groton, Wethersfield

Based on their InfoAnytime usage statistics, libraries are seeded, divided into regions and paired off. (See the InfoAnytime Challenge bracket.) The winner of each library pairing will advance to the next round. Winners are determined by the number of InfoAnytime sessions completed in the duration of the specific round.

Winners
The library that emerges from the finals with the most reference sessions wins the title! Receive bragging rights - and a Nintendo Wii™!

Another Way to Play - "Best Transcript"
Any InfoAnytime Library can participate in this event. Each library will identify and submit one transcript to the InfoAnytime Steering Committee. Transcripts are judged on accuracy, the reference interview, and patron satisfaction. The winning library in this competition will also win a Nintendo Wii™!

Schedule
The InfoAnytime Challenge will take place as follows:

  • 1st Round - Monday, May 5
  • 2nd Round - Tuesday, May 6
  • 3rd Round - Wednesday, May 7
  • 4th Round - Thursday, May 8
  • 5th Round (Semi-finals) - Friday-Monday, May 9-12 (totals for the 4 days)
  • 6th Round (Finals) - Tuesday-Friday, May 13-16 (totals for the 4 days)

Museum Pass List Updated for 2008; Museums Added to Programming/Resources Guide

Museum Passes are a unique and popular service for libraries to offer their patrons. If your library offers Museum Passes, be sure to see CLC's Museum Pass List PDF, updated for 2008. This one-stop shopping list conveniently lists all the pass details and contact info for over 50 museums, science centers and historic sites across southern New England. Download a copy PDF today, or call/email the CLC office to request a glossy brochure.

Because many museums also do programming, we've added a "Museum" search field to our Library Resources Online Catalog (LROC) - what you may know as the Programming Catalog. While updating their pass info, museums were also asked to upload their program info to the LROC. If you're looking for high quality, educational programming at your library, visit the LROC and select the "Museum" category. Here are some of the destinations you'll find:

CLC & Miranda Creative introduce
"Websites for Libraries" partnership

MIRANDA CREATIVE LOGO

Working to build websites for a number of CLC regional libraries the past few years has given Miranda Creative an opportunity to better understand libraries' unique needs. Based on this experience, Miranda has developed a website planning system that enables CLC members to maintain a unique web presence, yet remains cost effective within limited budgets. The full scope of the program was unveiled at the CLA Annual Conference. Visit www.websitesforlibraries.com for a detailed look at the program, or view an overview on CLC's partner page. For more information about this exciting program, contact Miranda Creative at 860.887.6882, ext. 511, or email sbagwell@mirandacreative.com.

CLC/OCLC Direct 2008-2009 Subscriptions

CLC offers CLC/OCLC Direct for the purpose of both saving money and providing convenient, customized training options for member libraries. Cataloging, ILL, and Access subscriptions are billed directly to libraries by OCLC, with no added surcharges, membership costs, or other fees. Libraries have the option of annual or monthly after-the-fact billing, or an interest-earning deposit account. For complete CLC/OCLC Direct program information, please see our CLC/OCLC Direct site.

For RENEWING libraries:
CLC will assume that all existing CLC/OCLC Direct Libraries are staying with CLC/OCLC Direct. OCLC will send renewal pricing for 2008-2009 directly to your library.

For NEW libraries:

  • Request pricing via our online Statement of Interest form by May 16, 2008. Submitting this form does NOT commit you to signing up for CLC/OCLC Direct.
  • Your library will receive a quote directly from OCLC for OCLC Core Services. Contact OCLC with any questions or comments.
  • To sign up for CLC/OCLC Direct, submit a Letter of Commitment (in PDF) to CLC by June 6, 2008.
